The chemistry of salt water, our own pH, the suction of a wave: the antihierarchy that nature presents is addressed by human perception through our endless, often abstract, narratives. By orchestrating the emotion of color and the rational geometry of quilts, Ashley Thayer creates striking visual abstractions to materialize such narratives. Ashley practices low immersion, vat dyeing, shibori, and various resist techniques used in Africa and India, allowing water to carry and resist marks on fiber. She uses reactive MX dyes, acid dyes, indigo, and natural dyes from botanicals foraged around her home in Los Angeles.

  • Can you tell me more about your gorgeous quilts? Are the dyes nontoxic/vegetable… or? Thanks so much.

  • Ashley Thayer says:

    Hi Abigail,
The quilts you see on the site currently are cotton with flannel batting and made with synthetic dyes. I use the least harmful soaps I can for fixing and washing the fabric. The next series of quilts will use natural (local plant) dyes and indigo which I hope to make my mainstay from now on.

Thank you! I will be presenting a new website shop this summer. In the meantime, email enquiries are welcome. Currently I don’t have many quilts on hand but will create them as requested. Prices vary according to size.
