Decorative Traces

Maricolous is now featured in the Maker section of Decorative Traces, a design blog based in NY. If you are looking for inspiration peruse their glossary, library, read interviews with aesthetes, or find out about events pertaining to the decorative arts like “Cardinal Mazarin and his Books.”
On a recent pass through the shop JF & SON on University Place, we were struck by a small selection of vibrant quilts. We soon learned the colorful bedcovers and a selection of table linens were the creation of Los Angeles based designer Ashley Thayer of Maricolous. Her process is homespun, from foraging plants around her backyard to produce dye, to weaving fiber into cloth on a hand loom. Piecing together the fabric in traditional geometric quilt patterns brings a captivating sense of order to the unrestrained nature of shibori and abstract dyeing techniques. Each work is unique and strikingly contemporary….
